There is nothing more fulfilling than establishing your own private clinical salon to provide services, build a client base, and witness the growth of your business. Your reputation for professional service can spread through word of mouth and client referrals, attracting new clients and boosting revenues for a successful lifestyle.

However, the issue of working alone is crucial to address.

As a self-employed massage therapist working independently, there is a risk of potential crimes such as abduction, theft, or assault, which must be taken into consideration given the rising rate of criminal activities in general.

Maintaining a safe working environment while engaging with clients is of utmost importance.

Therapists may opt to cater only to female clients, while accepting male clients based on recommendations from trusted clients. Whether you operate from a dedicated room at home, a space in a commercial salon, or offer home visits, developing a policy and procedures for lone working is essential.

Various suggestions are provided, and additional ones can be considered, with the primary focus being on your safety and security.

1. Create and establish a lone workers policy, considering recommendations from relevant Health and Safety Executives.

2. Install safety alarms, learn self-defence techniques, and consider carrying a defence device after checking the legal regulations in your area to understand your rights; everyone has the right to self-defence.

3. Establish connections with other therapists in the vicinity, collaborate with salons and beauty establishments to exchange information about potential risks.

4. Implement CCTV cameras at entry points and a door entry system to monitor and control access for scheduled appointments.

5. Conduct thorough client screenings and risk assessments during booking to identify any potential risks or red flags.

6. I personally discourage home visits, but if you choose to conduct them, inform family or friends about appointment schedules without disclosing confidential details.

7. If home visits are necessary, consider having a family member accompany you as a chaperone.

8. If minors book appointments, ensure they are accompanied by a guardian and have their consent for the treatment.

Conclusion

By following these guidelines, lone workers and independent massage therapists can reduce risks and create a safe environment for themselves and their clients.

Employers who adhere to these recommendations can establish a secure work environment, protecting both employees and assets from various threats.
